AI-Enhanced Art Engagement for Families with Diverse Visual Abilities

ArtInsight: Bridging the Visual Divide in Artistic Expression for Families with Blind or Low-Vision Members

In an innovative development within the intersection of art and technology, researchers have unveiled ArtInsight, an AI-driven system designed to enhance engagement with child- created artwork in families where some members are blind or have low vision (BLV). This pioneering platform utilizes advanced large language models (LLMs) to produce detailed and respectful descriptions of children’s artistic creations, thereby fostering a more inclusive environment for art appreciation.

ArtInsight’s features include not only sophisticated AI-generated descriptions that provide a vivid overview of the artwork but also the capability for audio recordings, allowing children to narrate their own interpretations. This personal touch can significantly enrich the viewer’s experience, facilitating a deeper understanding of the child’s intent and creativity. Additionally, the system offers a series of AI-generated questions aimed at sparking meaningful conversations between BLV family members and their sighted children about the artwork.

The development of ArtInsight is complemented by the introduction of a new rubric designed to evaluate AI-generated descriptions, ensuring that the outputs maintain high standards of quality and creativity. This rigorous assessment underscores the commitment to harnessing state-of-the-art language models while also evaluating their effectiveness in practical applications.

Recent evaluations of ArtInsight, conducted with five groups of BLV families and an in-depth case study involving a BLV child therapist, revealed compelling insights into user preferences. The feedback highlighted a clear preference for the system’s artistically tailored descriptions over those provided by existing tools aimed at assisting BLV individuals. Participants noted that the creative nature of the description not only “brought a picture to life” but also helped contextualize the children’s narratives effectively, enhancing the overall engagement with the artwork.

The findings from this research also emphasize the potential roles that AI can play in various phases of art interaction—before, during, and after engagement with the art. This comprehensive approach showcases the capability of AI to support art appreciation across differing visual abilities, paving the way for a more inclusive discourse around creativity and expression within families.

As advancements in AI continue to unfold, platforms like ArtInsight represent a significant step toward breaking down barriers of communication and understanding between individuals with varying visual capacities. This initiative not only promotes artistic expression but also fosters connections among family members, enhancing the shared experience of creativity and engagement.
