Michigan Parents Save an Average of K with Free PreK Program

Governor Whitmer Highlights Significant Growth in Michigan’s PreK Enrollment
LIVONIA, Mich. — Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced a notable increase in pre-kindergarten enrollment in Michigan, reflecting the state’s ongoing commitment to early childhood education. During a special event held at an early childhood center in Livonia, the Governor reported that 56% of the state’s four-year-olds are now enrolled in the Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP), marking a significant 24% increase from two years ago.
The enrollment figures have reached a record high, with approximately 47,500 students participating in GSRP—the most considerable enrollment seen in over a decade. This surge in participation is a direct result of Whitmer’s “PreK For All” initiative, which she first introduced in 2023 to enhance access to quality early education for families across Michigan.
“The average savings for parents utilizing free pre-K services is estimated at ,000,” Whitmer stated, emphasizing the program’s financial benefits to families. Furthermore, the Governor expressed her aspiration to increase enrollment to 60% for the upcoming year, underlining the program’s importance in preparing children for academic success.
During her remarks, Whitmer encouraged parents and community members to actively communicate with their legislators about the need for ongoing support for early childhood education initiatives. “Every child should have the opportunity to attend an amazing facility that provides strong support across the state. We want that for every child,” she declared.
Enrollment for the “PreK For All” program is currently open for the 2025-26 school year, catering to any child who will turn four by December 1. This initiative is designed to be inclusive, allowing families from various income levels to take advantage of the educational resources available. Dr. Beverly Walker-Griffea, Director of MiLEAP, reinforced the significance of early learning experiences in shaping children’s developmental pathways and future success. “PreK not only benefits four-year-olds, it also strengthens our economy,” she said, highlighting that a quality pre-K program enables parents to work or pursue their education with the peace of mind that their children are engaged in a safe and nurturing learning environment.
The growth in PreK enrollment in Michigan underscores a statewide initiative to prioritize early childhood education as a fundamental aspect of community investment and economic development. As enrollment opportunities expand, it is evident that the state is making strides towards ensuring that every child has access to quality early educational experiences.
