Enhanced library initiative provides complimentary digital and audiobooks in pediatric healthcare settings

St. Louis County Library Expands ePop Up Library Program to Healthcare Facilities
ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis County Library has broadened its innovative ePop Up Library initiative, providing children and families with immediate access to a wide selection of digital and audiobooks through a smartphone-friendly QR code system. This program, initially launched a year ago, aims to enhance the reading experience for patients and their families, particularly in settings where long wait times are common.
The ePop Up Library program already operates at select locations such as Lambert Airport, Metrolink stations, government buildings, and select Schnucks grocery stores. The recent expansion includes five local pediatric healthcare facilities: Ranken Jordan Pediatric Bridge Hospital, Ronald McDonald House Charities, Shriners Children’s St. Louis, Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital, and St. Louis Children’s Hospital. This initiative is designed to create an accessible literary resource for children who may be facing challenging circumstances due to medical conditions.
Laura Teague, a senior recreational therapist at Shriners Children’s St. Louis, remarked on the profound impact this partnership could have on patients. “This partnership opens up a literary world for our patients and families that will leave a life-long impact,” she stated, underscoring the importance of access to books in helping children cope with their hospital experiences.
Library Director and CEO Kristen Sorth highlighted the motivation behind this expansion, indicating that the library sought to incorporate more locations where patrons often wait for extended periods. Families can scan the QR code—displayed on promotional posters and bookmarks—leading to a dedicated site featuring hundreds of titles curated for children, teens, and adults. Notably, this resource does not require a library card, making it exceptionally user-friendly.
The QR code’s strategic placement above water fountains throughout the airport and Schnucks stores aims to encourage spontaneous reading as families navigate their daily lives. Leaders within the pediatric healthcare sector have praised this program, acknowledging its potential to alleviate stress and enhance the overall hospital experience for children.
Julie Schwarz, child life manager at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, expressed enthusiasm about the program’s potential therapeutic benefits. “This program will give our patients and families access to hundreds of books that can help them manage their stress and brighten their hospital stay,” she said, also noting that the program would serve as a valuable academic support tool for children.
The ePop Up Library initiative represents a significant step toward integrating literacy and healthcare, demonstrating the power of accessible reading materials in improving quality of life and offering educational support during pivotal times in a child’s health journey.
