Funding Secured for Housing Navigators to Address Homelessness in Yellowstone County

United Way of Yellowstone County Launches Initiative to Combat Family Homelessness
BILLINGS, Montana – In a proactive move to address the pressing issue of family homelessness, the United Way of Yellowstone County has unveiled a substantial initiative that will establish four community housing navigator positions across three local nonprofit organizations. This initiative is bolstered by an 0,000 grant awarded from the Day Open Families Fund in November 2023, reflecting a concerted effort to provide critical support to families in need.
The newly appointed community housing navigators will play a vital role in assisting families who are experiencing homelessness. Their responsibilities will include guiding families through complex paperwork, helping them connect with necessary resources, and providing ongoing support as they work towards securing stable housing. This initiative recognizes that homelessness is not solely a matter of housing, but encompasses a range of social needs that families must navigate.
Family Promise of Yellowstone Valley is one of the organizations set to benefit from this funding. A spokesperson from the organization emphasized the transformative nature of this support, stating, “The thing that we see at Family Promise all the time is that families often find themselves merely surviving rather than thriving. They sometimes didn’t have the opportunity to fully engage in parenting as they struggled to meet basic life demands.” This underscores the multifaceted realities faced by families without stable housing.
In addition to Family Promise, the initiative will provide funding for one navigator at Homefront, with two positions allocated to the Human Resource Development Council (HRDC). This strategic distribution aims to maximize outreach and effectiveness in tackling family homelessness within the community.
Moreover, the United Way has updated the public on its Housing Solutions Fund, a separate initiative amounting to million. This fund is designed to help families surmount various housing barriers over the next three years, demonstrating a long-term commitment to improving housing stability in Yellowstone County.
The concerted efforts by the United Way and its partnering organizations represent a significant investment in the community’s future, aiming to not only alleviate immediate homelessness but also promote sustainable housing solutions for families in need. As the initiative unfolds, it is anticipated to create a lasting impact on the lives of many citizens in Billings and the surrounding areas, fostering a healthier and more resilient community.
This initiative marks a critical step towards addressing the systemic issues that contribute to family homelessness and reflects a growing recognition of the importance of community-based support systems. As these navigators begin their work, they will be pivotal in bridging gaps between families and the resources necessary to facilitate long-term housing stability.
