A Collaborative USA 250 Challenge between Two Departments
California and Washington Departments of the American Legion Engage in Friendly Competition Ahead of America’s 250th Birthday
As the nation prepares to celebrate its 250th anniversary in 2026, the American Legion is spearheading the USA 250 Challenge, an initiative designed to promote physical fitness, mental health, and community service. Advocated by the American Legion, this challenge invites participants to log 250 miles or hours of activities in one, two, or all three categories by July 4, 2026, while fostering camaraderie among members and building community connections.
In a spirited move to invigorate participation, the American Legion Department of California and the Department of Washington have issued a friendly challenge to one another. Department Commanders David Brambila of California and Al Jensen of Washington have set their sights on registering the most participants for this initiative prior to the opening ceremony of the 106th National Convention in Tampa, Florida, on August 26.
Commander Brambila emphasized the significance of the USA 250 Challenge, stating, “This challenge has the potential to energize our membership, reinforce our commitment to service, and build momentum as we approach the United States’ 250th anniversary.” He believes that the challenge instills a sense of responsibility towards personal health and community welfare, enhancing individual growth and strengthening communal bonds.
Similarly, Commander Jensen views the initiative as a vital opportunity to galvanize participation across various posts within the Washington Department. He stated, “A little challenge is always a good motivator,” and underscored that the three categories of the challenge cater to diverse demographics within their membership, ensuring inclusivity. Jensen noted, “Doing things for our physical and mental well-being is so important, and this gives another motivation,” reiterating that the community service aspect aligns closely with the ongoing efforts of many members.

While the competitive element between the two departments concludes on August 26, both Brambila and Jensen encourage all Legion Family members to register and engage in the challenge until the event’s culmination on July 4, 2026. Brambila envisions a strong display of enthusiasm, teamwork, and shared purpose among the participants. He expressed a desire to see members actively contributing to the Legion’s mission, whether by recruiting new members or deepening their involvement.
Jensen echoed similar sentiments about fostering unity, stating that the challenge serves as a means to bring together the Department of Washington, emphasizing, “Show that the Department of Washington is back.” As preparations for the nation’s milestone birthday commence, the USA 250 Challenge stands as a testament to the American Legion’s commitment to health, service, and community spirit.
