Catawba County Schools Appoints Erin Gates as Director of QUEST Childcare Services
NEWTON, NC — In a significant move for early childhood education within the region, the Catawba County Board of Education has officially appointed Erin Gates as the new Director of QUEST Childcare Services. This decision was ratified during the Board’s scheduled meeting, and Gates is set to assume her new responsibilities on July 1.
Superintendent Dr. Matt Stover expressed his confidence in Gates, highlighting her extensive background in early childhood and elementary education. “Mrs. Gates brings a wealth of knowledge in early childhood and elementary education, as well as a deep understanding of our district and the families we serve,” he noted. Stover emphasized that Gates’ dedication to student success and her personal connection to the QUEST program render her exceptionally qualified for this role.
Gates, originally hailing from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, holds dual degrees in elementary and early childhood education from Grove City College. Her teaching career began in Maryland and Virginia, where she worked in Pre-K classrooms, showcasing her commitment to early childhood education. Recognizing the importance of further education, she pursued and earned a master’s degree in reading from Salisbury University, later serving as an elementary reading specialist in various school districts, including within Virginia and North Carolina.
Since joining Catawba County Schools in 2019, Gates has made significant contributions to the academic landscape, particularly as an academic facilitator at the Catawba Rosenwald Education Center. Her leadership qualities were recognized in 2022 when she was appointed assistant principal at the same institution after completing a graduate certificate in School Leadership from Appalachian State University.
As the newly appointed Director of QUEST, Gates will be responsible for overseeing before-school, after-school, and summer childcare programs that cater to numerous families within Catawba County. The QUEST program plays a pivotal role in supporting working parents and fostering the early development of children, significantly contributing to the community.
Reflecting on her upcoming position, Gates articulated her enthusiasm: “Elementary and early childhood students have always held a special place in my heart. QUEST was an integral resource for my family when my children attended Blackburn Elementary School. I am excited to enhance this excellent program and further support our county’s families.”
Gates resides in the Mountain View community with her husband Jon and their two daughters, Zoe, who is set to enter Fred T. Foard High School, and Riley, an incoming seventh grader at Jacobs Fork Middle School. Outside of her professional commitments, she enjoys gardening, canning, baking, and exploring the great outdoors with her family through hiking and kayaking adventures throughout Catawba County.
This appointment signifies a continued commitment from Catawba County Schools to enhance educational opportunities and childcare services, vital for the community’s growth and the development of its youth.
