Contemporary Elegance Blends with Family Comfort in This Morningside Heights Residence

Family-Centric Design: A Look into a Morningside Heights Duplex Renovation

Nestled in the vibrant community of Morningside Heights, this newly renovated duplex apartment serves as a warm and inviting home for a family of four, including two energetic young boys. Kylie K. Bass, founder of KKB Interiors, emphasizes the neighborhood’s charm, citing its family-friendly atmosphere, an abundance of local cafes, libraries, and cultural attractions. “Morningside Heights is such a special neighborhood for families,” she notes, highlighting the area’s sense of community and welcoming spirit.

The design process for this bustling household was meticulously crafted to cater to specific needs. The mother, a television correspondent, required a functional space to prepare for her early morning routines without disrupting her sons. “Creating a designated area for her morning coffee and getting ready was essential to maintaining harmony in their busy mornings,” Bass explains. Additionally, the two boys’ love for baseball inspired the inclusion of a practical mudroom on the lower level, designed to facilitate easy cleanup after outdoor play, thereby minimizing dirt tracked through the living spaces.

Hosting gatherings is integral to the family’s lifestyle. As such, a major focus of the renovation was the kitchen, which features one of the largest islands possible. “The kitchen is the heart of their home, and it naturally serves as a gathering spot for friends and family,” Bass states. A cozy fireplace was also introduced, providing warmth and comfort to the living space, masterfully crafted by Hearth Cabinet. The overarching aim was to cultivate an environment that promotes comfort, connectivity, and joy for all visitors.

Undertaking a gut renovation of a pre-war building came with its own set of challenges. Unforeseen obstacles, notably immovable plumbing in the primary bathroom, required innovative thinking. “We had to think outside the box; altering the ceiling structure and designing custom elements allowed us to conceal the disruptions creatively,” Bass recalls. These design adjustments not only resolved practical issues but also contributed unique character to the home.

The completed residence embodies a modern classical style, characterized by warm textures and the carefully curated details synonymous with KKB Interiors. “Involvement from the very beginning was paramount. Working closely with the family, I designed a floor plan tailored to their lifestyle, ensuring that every detail aligned with their vision,” Bass explains. This commitment to collaboration was crucial in transforming their ideas into reality, affirming that even unexpected hurdles can lead to distinctive enhancements.

With its thoughtful design and attention to detail, this duplex stands as a testament to the synergy between functionality and aesthetics, making it a true family sanctuary in the heart of New York City.
