Baltimore Area Scouting Program Welcomes New Members in a Robust Fall Season
As autumn unfolds, the Scouting program is witnessing a vigorous start with a plethora of engaging activities designed for both new and returning participants. This fall, the Greater Baltimore area is set to see the addition of over 1,500 new youth members to its Scouting ranks, highlighting the program’s sustained appeal and community involvement.
For the past seven years, Scouting has embraced a co-ed model, breaking traditional gender barriers to foster inclusivity. Currently, approximately 16% of the membership in the Baltimore Area Council, which totals around 12,000 youth, is comprised of females. This shift towards co-education reflects a broader societal trend towards gender equality and the acknowledgment that leadership skills and personal development are beneficial for all youths, regardless of gender.
The Scouting program offers families a unique opportunity to bond while their children acquire essential life skills. Over its century-long history, Scouting has instilled values of citizenship, leadership, and self-reliance in the nation’s youth. The Baltimore Area Council has made a notable impact in the community, with Scouts completing more than 59,000 hours of community service in the past year alone. Furthermore, they have collected upwards of 120,000 pounds of food for local food pantries, showcasing the program’s commitment to community service and social responsibility.
The active recruitment of new members, especially in the Cub Scout division, emphasizes the program’s ongoing mission to prepare youth for future challenges. With a rich variety of activities planned for the upcoming months, new recruits will have ample opportunities to engage in learning experiences that promote teamwork, environmental stewardship, and outdoor skills, in addition to fostering lasting friendships.
