Five Wind Turbines are Now Operational at Massachusetts’ Inaugural Offshore Wind Farm – Gamers DXB

In a significant milestone for US offshore wind energy, the first five turbines at Vineyard Wind 1 in Massachusetts have been successfully activated. These 13-megawatt (MW) turbines are now producing approximately 65 MW of clean energy, providing power to around 30,000 homes and businesses in Massachusetts.

Governor Maura Healey (D-MA) commented, “This marks a turning point in the clean energy transition. After years of advocacy and hard work, America’s offshore wind industry has become a reality.”

On January 2, the first turbine at Vineyard Wind 1 began delivering 5 MW of electricity to the grid. Currently, nine turbines are installed with the tenth in progress, and the 11th ready for transport to the offshore site. Each GE Haliade-X turbine features a 220-meter rotor, 107-meter blades, and stands at 248 meters tall. One turbine can power over 6,000 homes and businesses.

Once complete, the 806 MW Vineyard Wind 1 project will consist of 62 turbines generating power for more than 400,000 establishments, saving customers .4 billion over the first 20 years of operation. It is anticipated to reduce carbon emissions by over 1.6 million metric tons annually, equivalent to the removal of 325,000 cars from the road each year.

Located 15 miles south of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket, and 35 miles from mainland Massachusetts, the .5 billion Vineyard Wind 1 project is a collaboration between Avangrid and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners. Full power capacity is expected to be reached by mid-2024.
