From Homelessness to Hero: The Inspiring Journey of Chicago Police Officer Lavelle Schaffer

Chicago, IL – As the holiday season approaches, many reflect on gratitude and resilience, but few exemplify these qualities as profoundly as Lavelle Schaffer, a Chicago police officer whose journey from homelessness to law enforcement inspires both community members and aspiring professionals. At 33 years old, Schaffer has found his footing in his career while embracing his role as a devoted father to two young sons.

“My life has come full circle,” Schaffer remarked, reflecting on how he has overcome significant obstacles to reach his current position. He continues to embody the ideals of determination and hope, inspired by his children, who express their admiration with dreams of following in his footsteps. “When I read their homework, and they say they want to be police officers like their dad, it fills my heart with pride,” Schaffer shared.

This poignant narrative, however, stands in stark contrast to Schaffer’s past. A decade ago, he faced unimaginable challenges. During a tumultuous period in his life, he and his girlfriend became unhoused while expecting their first child. This experience saw them sleeping on trains, with each day becoming a struggle for survival. Schaffer recalls, “Every day was like survival mode. ‘Where am I sleeping? Who’s going to stay up?’ That takes a toll on you.”

The turning point came through a serendipitous encounter with an employee from Metropolitan Family Services at a shelter. This connection provided him with resources that would ultimately change the trajectory of his life. Through this organization, Schaffer received vital services, including mental health counseling, transportation vouchers, and classes in parenting and financial management. “Ever since then, here I am,” he said, underscoring the significance of that moment over ten years ago. “It’s 2024, and that one card kind of changed my whole life.”

Today, Schaffer not only fulfills his role as a police officer but is also recognized by Metropolitan Family Services as their “Father of the Year” for his contributions to the community. As a testament to his dedication to giving back, Schaffer now serves on the board and actively mentors other young fathers, offering guidance based on his own life experiences. Carrie Pullie, Executive Director of Metropolitan Calumet Center, noted, “He not only motivates and inspires the clients; he motivates and inspires us.”
