Fort Drum FMWR Organizes Thanksgiving Dinner for Local Community

Fort Drum Community Celebrates Thanksgiving with Turkey Trot and ‘Home for the Holidays’ Feast
FORT DRUM, N.Y. — On November 27, 2025, the Fort Drum community marked the Thanksgiving holiday with enthusiasm and camaraderie, featuring a 5K Turkey Trot followed by a communal meal at The Peak. More than 300 participants took part in the morning run, braving inclement weather, including chilly winds and hail. The event, organized by the Fort Drum Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (FMWR) team, served as a means to unite Soldiers, their families, Department of Defense (DOD) civilians, and military retirees in celebration of community spirit and togetherness.
Jon Burnard, the supervisory community recreation coordinator for Fort Drum FMWR, emphasized the importance of the Turkey Trot, particularly for single Soldiers who may not be able to return home for the holidays. “This is a great way to bring the entire community together,” said Burnard. “It allows everyone to participate in a healthy activity before enjoying a hearty meal.”
Among the enthusiastic participants was Max Dummar, whose son Ezra is a member of the Child and Youth Services’ Run Club. “Family is an important part of Fort Drum, and these events are a way of taking care of Soldiers and families,” highlighted Dummar, who valued the opportunity to run alongside his son.
The Turkey Trot concluded with Aiden Ragsdale of the Indian River High School cross-country team claiming first place, followed closely by his teammates. Reflecting on the event, Ragsdale noted his desire to maintain his running routine post-cross country season, indicating the social aspect of the race was an appealing component.
Following the race, many community members converged at The Peak for the “Home for the Holidays” event, where volunteers greeted guests with a festive meal designed to accommodate up to 800 attendees. The holiday feast included traditional fare such as turkey, ham, and various seasonal sides, along with an array of pies and ice cream flavors, ensuring a delectable experience for all.
Becky Morgia, chief of the Fort Drum FMWR Business and Community Recreation Division, remarked on the significance of the “Home for the Holidays” event, especially for those unable to travel to their families during Thanksgiving. “We are their family for the day,” Morgia expressed, acknowledging the contributions of over 40 volunteers, many affiliated with the Fort Drum Better Opportunity for Single Soldiers (BOSS) program.
This annual celebration not only fosters a sense of belonging among community members but also strengthens the bonds among Soldiers and their families during a time of year that emphasizes gratitude and togetherness.
