”Game Developer Gearbox Could Potentially Be for Sale in the Near Future”
Embracer Group, the parent company of Borderlands developer Gearbox Software, is reportedly considering selling the studio to a third party. The decision was revealed by Gearbox CEO and co-founder Randy Pitchford in a recent meeting with staff members. While specific details have not been shared yet, Pitchford mentioned that the future of the developer will be announced next month.
Sources close to Gearbox have indicated that three possible scenarios are being considered – remaining with Embracer Group, selling to another company, or becoming independent by buying out their contract. This news comes amidst a wave of changes within Embracer Group, which recently saw Saber Interactive, developers of the Knights Of The Old Republic remake, being sold to private investors for up to 0 million.
Embracer Group has been undergoing a restructuring program since last June, resulting in over 1,400 employees being laid off. The potential sale of Gearbox and Saber Interactive is part of these strategic changes within the company.
