How to Apply for Free Sleepaway Camps in New York State

Planning for Summer: The Fresh Air Fund Opens Registration for Free Sleepaway Camps in New York
As families begin to contemplate summer activities, the Fresh Air Fund has officially launched registration for its acclaimed camp program, providing a unique opportunity for children from New York City. This initiative offers eligible youth, aged 8 to 15, the chance to experience free sleepaway camps nestled in New York’s picturesque mid-Hudson Valley, as well as the option to stay with local volunteer host families along the East Coast.
The Fresh Air Fund, which has been a cornerstone of transformative outdoor experiences for youth since its inception nearly 150 years ago, emphasizes the importance of connecting children with nature. “We are looking forward to welcoming returning and new campers for an incredible summer,” stated Lisa Gitelson, CEO of The Fresh Air Fund. This program is designed not only to foster a love for the outdoors but also to promote personal growth and the acquisition of new skills in a supportive environment.
Participants in the program engage in a wide array of activities, including swimming, hiking, and team sports, alongside creative pursuits such as music classes, arts and crafts, photography, and coding. These enriching experiences are crucial for personal development and provide a balance of education through fun and adventure.
Camp Locations and Experiences
The Fresh Air Fund operates five distinct sleepaway camps located at the Sharpe Reservation in Fishkill, New York, encompassing over 2,000 acres of natural beauty, as well as Camp Junior situated in Harriman State Park. Just two hours from New York City, these locations feature diverse attractions, including nature trails, serene lakes, lush streams, and even a planetarium, providing campers with rich learning environments.
Additionally, the opportunity to stay with volunteer host families presents an enriching experience, allowing campers to partake in local traditions such as cycling, swimming, and backyard games, thus further reinforcing social bonds. The volunteer families, vetted through a thorough screening process, reside in various small towns and suburbs primarily within the Tristate area.
To ensure accessibility, the program offers charter bus transportation from New York City to camps and host families.
Eligibility and Registration Information
The camp program is open to children aged 8 to 15 who reside and attend school in New York City. To be eligible, applicants must meet specific income requirements. Additionally, youths aged 16 to 17 can qualify for a Counselor-in-Training (CIT) Program designed to develop leadership and staff skills.
The registration process for summer 2025 is now available through the Fresh Air Fund website. Families are required to create an account or log in to an existing one to initiate the registration for their children.
Employment Opportunities at the Camps
The Fresh Air Fund is currently seeking summer camp staff, including counselors, program specialists, lifeguards, and nurses. These paid positions also offer room and board, making it a valuable opportunity for those looking to gain experience in a camp setting. Candidates must be 18 or older by the start of camp to qualify.
As summer approaches, the Fresh Air Fund’s programs remain a vital resource for families in New York City, providing children with experiences that promote growth, learning, and an appreciation for the outdoors, all while creating lasting memories.
