Mike Linnig’s Reopens for Its 101st Season: A Culinary Legacy in Southwest Louisville
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Each January, the Linnig family embarks on a cherished tradition as they prepare to reopen Mike Linnig’s, a beloved seafood restaurant that has become synonymous with the culinary landscape of Southwest Louisville. This year marks a significant milestone, with the restaurant celebrating its 101st season, a testament to enduring family ties and the robust support of the local community.
Located in a region steeped in history, Mike Linnig’s initially began its journey as a modest fruit and vegetable stand in 1925, founded by Bill Linnig’s grandfather. Over generations, the establishment has transformed into one of Louisville’s most iconic seafood destinations. Bill Linnig, now leading the family business as the third-generation owner, reflects on the restaurant’s deep roots. “We always think about its history,” he remarked. “Every inch of this place has been walked by my grandparents, my parents, or my siblings. We have a lot of family history here.”
The restaurant is renowned not only for its seafood but also for its signature onion rings, which are a particular favorite among patrons. To meet demand, Mike Linnig’s utilizes an astonishing 3,000 pounds of onions each week, underlining the restaurant’s commitment to providing high-quality, satisfying meals that keep customers coming back.
Bill attributes the restaurant’s longevity to two pivotal elements: the strength of family bonds and the unwavering support from the neighborhood. “We are kind of like a staple in Southwest Louisville, and we like it like that,” he said, emphasizing his desire for the establishment to serve as a community cornerstone.
Throughout its storied past, Mike Linnig’s has fostered a sense of belonging and consistency for locals. The restaurant’s commitment to maintaining high service and culinary standards has made it a beloved destination for seafood lovers within the region, drawing visitors from near and far.
The restaurant operates from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday to Thursday, extends its hours to 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and welcomes diners from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Sundays. It remains closed on Mondays to allow the staff to prepare for the bustling week ahead.
As Mike Linnig’s begins another season, it embodies the legacy of family, community, and culinary excellence, solidifying its status as a cherished institution in Louisville’s vibrant food scene.
