May 31: Conference on Parenting in the Face of Trauma

Women’s Resource Centre to Host Parenting Through Trauma Conference
The Women’s Resource Centre (WRC), in collaboration with several local community partners, will hold the Parenting Through Trauma Conference on May 31, 2025, from 9 AM to 5 PM at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI). This conference aims to provide support for mothers, fathers, and caregivers facing the dual challenges of parenting while healing from trauma. Tickets for the event are priced at , which includes lunch.
This initiative is made possible through collaboration with notable community organizations, including the Family Centre, SHIFT, Simply Bloom, The Coalition for the Protection of Children, and the Gina Spence Programme. Collectively, these organizations aim to offer a nurturing environment where caregivers can learn and heal.
Childhood trauma has been increasingly recognized for its long-term effects on emotional, cognitive, and behavioral growth. Children who endure trauma may struggle with issues related to attachment, emotional regulation, learning, and trust. In the context of parenting, it becomes imperative for caregivers to not only understand these ramifications but also to address their own unresolved traumas. This understanding is crucial for fostering a compassionate and supportive environment for their children.
Juanae Crockwell, Executive Director of the Women’s Resource Centre, emphasized the urgent need for such a conference within the community. “Parenting is one of the most demanding roles a person can take on, particularly when combined with the burden of unresolved trauma,” she stated. “Many individuals we support are not merely seeking parenting tools but are eager to break generational cycles, rebuild trust, and develop nurturing environments for their children.”
The conference will feature a diverse array of workshops led by experts in the field. Key topics will include “How Exposure to Trauma Impacts Children,” presented by the Family Centre, “Rebuilding Safety: Nurturing Secure Attachments” by Simply Bloom, and “The Healing Power of a Genuine Apology” by SHIFT. Another significant workshop, “Parenting Together: Co-Parenting,” led by the Coalition for the Protection of Children, will focus on enhancing co-parenting relationships.
A unique aspect of the conference will be gender-specific breakout sessions. These sessions will facilitate private discussions among male and female caregivers, allowing them to share their experiences and build a support network. The event will culminate in a panel discussion, where participants can gain insights into practical resources available for navigating parenting-related challenges.
The necessity for such a conference has been underscored by the social and economic hurdles facing many families in Bermuda, including rising living costs and limited access to mental health services. These challenges can exacerbate the stress experienced by parents and caregivers, making supportive initiatives like the Parenting Through Trauma Conference not just beneficial, but vital.
Crockwell noted, “This conference doesn’t only cater to those in crisis; it is for any parent or caregiver committed to personal growth, healing, and intentional parenting.” She reiterated the importance of inclusive spaces to ensure that all members of a family unit can engage in the healing process collectively.
