Mississippi Plans to Streamline Obstetric Services

Memorial Hospital Biloxi in Mississippi has announced that it will discontinue its obstetrics services, effective September 1, 2023, transferring these comprehensive maternity services to Memorial Hospital Gulfport. Both facilities are integral parts of the Memorial Hospital System operating in the Gulfport area.

The consolidation of obstetrics services encompasses critical components such as labor and delivery, nursery care, and the mother and baby unit. According to an official statement released on August 11, the move aims to enhance the quality of maternity care available to expectant mothers in the region. “This transition will allow all expectant mothers to benefit from the region’s most advanced maternity care in one location,” the statement asserted, underscoring the hospital’s commitment to fostering and expanding medical services for the community.

By centralizing maternity care at Memorial Hospital Gulfport, which is well-equipped to provide advanced services, families can expect a more cohesive and well-supported birthing experience. The hospital boasts a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), recognized as the only NICU available along Mississippi’s Gulf Coast. This facility is pivotal for infants requiring specialized medical attention. In addition, Memorial Hospital Gulfport offers a range of services, including a round-the-clock laborist program, breastfeeding support, family education, and an emergency department dedicated to obstetrics.

Despite the closure of its obstetrics services, Memorial Hospital Biloxi will continue to provide gynecological surgical services. The hospital has also pledged to support its employees affected by this transition. All team members from the obstetrics department will be given opportunities to transition into other positions within the Memorial Health System, including roles remaining at the Biloxi location.
