Allen County Public Library Enhances Accessibility for Non-Native English Speakers with New Website Launch

In a significant move towards fostering inclusivity, the Allen County Public Library (ACPL) has unveiled a new website dedicated to serving non-native English speakers. This initiative is timely, coinciding with Welcoming Week, an annual event organized by Amani Family Services that seeks to celebrate diversity and promote cultural integration. This year’s Welcoming Week is ongoing, wrapping up on Saturday, and features a variety of multicultural events, workshops aimed at enhancing civil literacy, and other community-focused activities.

According to recent census data, nearly 14 percent of residents in Allen County—approximately 54,000 individuals—speak a language other than English at home. This statistic highlights a growing need for accessible resources tailored to the needs of this demographic. The newly launched Cultural Connection website addresses this need by providing resources in multiple native languages, thereby facilitating the integration of new residents as they work to learn English.

The website offers information in 12 different native languages, including Burmese, Spanish, and Vietnamese. This strategic focus not only enhances accessibility but also embraces the multicultural fabric of Allen County. Among the resources available are user guides for navigating library services, instructions on how to secure free gardening seeds, and information about various language services that can aid residents in their language acquisition processes.

The launch of this website directly supports key components of the ACPL’s 2024–2028 Strategic Plan, aptly titled “Allen County’s Window to Lifelong Learning and Discovery.” Within this framework, the library aims to create a culture of belonging that welcomes diverse populations to access educational resources and engage with the community.

This initiative is part of a broader movement among public institutions to ensure that all community members, regardless of their linguistic background, have equal access to vital services. As Allen County continues to embrace its diverse population, the library’s efforts stand as a commendable example of how local organizations can play a pivotal role in fostering inclusivity and lifelong learning.
