OKC Thunder Team Delivers Thanksgiving Dinner at Local Rescue Mission

Oklahoma City Thunder Players Bring Joy to Local Families Through Thanksgiving Dinner at City Rescue Mission
Oklahoma City, OK — In a heartwarming display of community service, the entire roster of the Oklahoma City Thunder, alongside coaches, transformed from athletes into volunteers this past Tuesday at the City Rescue Mission. The team’s participation in serving Thanksgiving dinners underscored their commitment to giving back to the local community, particularly to families facing homelessness during the holiday season.
Typically, it is fans who gather in large numbers to support the Thunder during games, but on this occasion, the players took the lead in offering warmth and sustenance to those in need. The City Rescue Mission, located near Oklahoma City and Classen boulevards, opened its doors to families seeking support, creating an ideal backdrop for the Thunder’s charitable efforts.
Star player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, alongside his teammates, engaged directly with the community, helping to serve meals and interact with families. “We want to make sure we’re giving back to the community and being a part of the culture here in Oklahoma City,” said Aaron Wiggins, a forward for the Thunder. “It’s great to pass out food, spend time with kids, and build relationships with the people here.”
The event not only filled stomachs but also brought smiles to the faces of children and parents alike. Players engaged in various activities, such as taking photographs and assisting kids in creating personalized picture frames, an endeavor that left a lasting impression on both parties. “I made a few picture frames with some kids,” said Cason Wallace, another Thunder player. “It was fun seeing their excitement.”
The significance of such initiatives becomes even more pronounced during the holiday season, a time that can be particularly challenging for individuals and families experiencing homelessness. Erin Goodin, president and CEO of City Rescue Mission, emphasized the profound impact of the players’ presence. “The holidays can be a difficult time for someone facing homelessness. A little bit of hope goes a long way, and the Thunder players coming out here really helps to restore that hope,” she stated.
Attendance included not only the Thunder players but also the team’s mascot, Rumble the Bison, and a few Thunder dancers, making the event more festive and engaging for those in attendance. The collective efforts of the Oklahoma City Thunder exemplify the role of professional athletes as community leaders, using their platforms to create a positive change and bring joy to those who need it most, particularly during the holiday season.
This act of kindness is a reminder that even small gestures of compassion can illuminate the lives of others, reinforcing community ties and inspiring others to contribute to the greater good.
