Teen Leadership Workshops Offered by TRIO Destination College Program

In January, the TRIO Destination College program at Lake Land College successfully executed a series of dynamic leadership workshops, aimed at fostering essential skills among middle and high school students from 18 local educational institutions. This initiative emphasizes the college’s mission to prepare young individuals for the challenges of higher education and the workforce.

Led by Outreach Advisors Tara Schaljo and Codi Julius, the workshops featured a range of engaging activities designed to promote collaboration, enhance teamwork, and develop effective time management skills. Participants engaged in a variety of exercises that required them to work together, thereby nurturing their ability to lead and perform as part of a cohesive unit. Following these activities, Schaljo and Julius guided participants in discussions centered on various leadership styles and the intricacies of teamwork dynamics, both of which are critical competencies in any academic or professional setting.

The leadership workshops are just one aspect of the comprehensive support offered by TRIO Destination College, a program dedicated to equipping students with vital tools necessary for achieving their educational and career aspirations. Besides conducting workshops, TRIO advisors also provide one-on-one guidance for high school students. This personalized support includes exploring potential career paths, navigating the complexities of financial aid applications, scholarship opportunities, college orientation processes, and course registration.

TRIO Destination College operates under a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, underscoring the program’s commitment to ensuring that junior high and high school students are not only prepared to graduate but also equipped to transition smoothly into college life. This initiative aims to bridge academic gaps and enhance access to higher education for underrepresented populations, thereby contributing to greater overall educational equity.
