In a significant advancement for working parents pursuing higher education, Rollins College has introduced the Evening Educare program. This initiative aims to provide affordable, high-quality childcare services for students enrolled in the Hamilton Holt School’s Professional Advancement and Graduate Studies programs. By addressing the critical need for dependable childcare during evening classes, the program seeks to enhance educational accessibility for parents.

The Evening Educare program is strategically located within the Hume House Child Development & Student Research Center on the Rollins campus. It caters to children aged 5 to 11 years, allowing parents to focus on their studies while having peace of mind regarding their children’s care. This initiative not only supports student parents but also aligns with broader institutional goals of fostering an inclusive and supportive educational environment.

One of the distinguishing features of the Evening Educare program is its teacher-to-child ratio, which is notably lower than that of typical childcare operations. The program maintains a ratio of at least one teacher for every six children, enabling more personalized attention and engagement for each child. This approach not only enhances the safety and well-being of the children but also promotes a nurturing atmosphere conducive to learning and development.

Launched in the fall of 2024, the program is positioned as a valuable resource for students balancing coursework and family responsibilities. Currently, the cost for utilizing the service is per hour for the spring and summer semesters of 2025, making it an accessible option for many. Furthermore, the initiative has been bolstered by a generous contribution from the Warren and Augusta Hume Foundation, which will enable eligible students to benefit from free childcare services starting in the fall of 2025.

By implementing the Evening Educare program, Rollins College is making considerable strides toward supporting its student-parent population, thus reinforcing its commitment to educational equity and community support. This initiative not only meets immediate childcare needs but also reflects a growing recognition of the unique challenges faced by students who are also caregivers.
