Washoe County Sheriff’s “Green for Gold” Team Shaves Heads in Preparation for Annual Shave for the Brave Event

Community Rallies for Childhood Cancer Research at Annual “Shave for the Brave” Event in Reno

RENO, Nev. – As St. Patrick’s Day approaches, a unique and impactful event geared towards supporting childhood cancer research will take center stage in Reno. The Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation (NNCCF) invites the community to participate in its 20th Annual “Shave for the Brave” event on Friday, March 7, 2025, at the Reno Ballroom, located at 401 N. Center St., starting at 5:30 p.m.

For the twelfth consecutive year, members from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office will part with their hair in solidarity with children battling cancer. This community-driven initiative encourages participants to shave their heads to raise awareness and funds for research through the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. Participants not only demonstrate their support for a critical cause but also engage in a unique form of activism, visually representing their commitment to eradicating childhood cancer.

Since its inception, the “Shave for the Brave” event has made significant strides, with over 4,930 local individuals participating and raising vital funds for cancer research. The alarming statistic from the National Cancer Institute reveals that one in every 263 children in the United States will receive a cancer diagnosis. Alarmingly, less than 4% of the federal budget allocated for cancer research is directed towards childhood cancers, highlighting the importance of grassroots efforts like NNCCF’s initiative.

NNCCF stands out as the only non-profit organization in Northern Nevada dedicated exclusively to supporting local children and families affected by childhood cancer. Their programs encompass a range of services, including the Family Assistance Fund, Inspire Scholarship program, and the Hope for the Holidays program, all designed to alleviate the burdens faced by families during these challenging times. Additionally, the foundation offers emotional support through initiatives like the No More Chemo celebrations, fostering a sense of community and hope among families.

For those interested in joining this noble cause, detailed information regarding registration and event involvement is available at the St. Baldrick’s event page. The “Shave for the Brave” event not only signifies a communal effort to support critical childhood cancer research but also fosters awareness and unity against an issue that affects thousands of families across the nation.

By participating in this event, individuals can help amplify the voices of families fighting against childhood cancer, contribute to essential research funding, and inspire hope in the fight against this devastating disease.
