Whiting Library to Present Screening of “Matter of Mind: My Alzheimer’s”
Community Event in Chester, Vermont to Address Alzheimer’s Caregiving and Support
CHESTER, Vt. – The Whiting Library in Chester will host a free screening of the poignant documentary “Matter of Mind: My Alzheimer’s” on Thursday, May 1, at 6 p.m. This screening is part of the Indie Lens Pop-Up series, presented in collaboration with ITVS and Independent Lens, aimed at fostering community dialogue around critical societal issues.
Following the film, attendees will have the opportunity to engage in a discussion led by Joanne Erenhouse from Senior Solutions. This conversation promises to be both informative and insightful, focusing on various aspects of Alzheimer’s care, including the challenges faced by caregivers, the transformation of relationships when one partner takes on the caregiver role, and the vital importance of community support for those affected by the disease.
The documentary, “Matter of Mind: My Alzheimer’s,” serves as a powerful exploration of the emotional and practical implications of an Alzheimer’s diagnosis on families. With nearly 7 million individuals in the United States currently living with Alzheimer’s disease, the statistics reveal a staggering reality: family and friends of those living with dementia provide an estimated 18 billion hours of unpaid care each year. This film aims to move beyond the numbers, offering a rich narrative that delves into the lived experiences of caregivers and their loved ones.
Through the stories of three families, the film highlights the profound changes in family dynamics that occur when a member is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Themes of identity, roles, and relationships are intricately woven throughout the film, allowing viewers to gain a deeper understanding of what it means to live through such a transformative experience.
In addition, the Whiting Library will unveil a new memory collection, featuring games and aids designed specifically for patients and caregivers. This initiative is made possible through a grant from the Libraries Transforming Communities Accessible Small and Rural Communities program, underscoring the library’s commitment to enhancing community resources for Alzheimer’s support.
The Whiting Library is conveniently located at 117 Main Street in Chester, Vermont. Community members are encouraged to RSVP for the event by calling 802-875-2277 or emailing director@whitinglibrary.org.
For those interested in a wider audience, “Matter of Mind: My Alzheimer’s” will also premiere on PBS and be available on the PBS app starting May 5 at 10 p.m., providing a broader platform for discussion and awareness regarding Alzheimer’s disease.
This community-focused event not only seeks to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s but also aims to foster connections among caregivers and provide resources to those who need them most.
