Construction Underway for Over 50 Homes in Pratt City for Homeownership Month

Birmingham Expands Affordable Housing Initiatives in Pratt City Through New Partnership
This week marked the commencement of a significant site development initiative in Birmingham, Alabama, as the city collaborates with the National Community Reinvestment Coalition (NCRC) to construct 52 single-family homes in the Pratt City subdivision of Shadow Brook. This project is part of a broader strategy aimed at addressing the urgent need for affordable, energy-efficient housing within the region.
The initiative reflects the City of Birmingham’s commitment to investing .6 million in housing projects, a move designed to bolster the city’s ongoing efforts to provide accessible housing options for its residents. Mayor Randall L. Woodfin’s administration has pledged to create 2,500 new affordable housing units, with recent developments indicating that the city is on the path to fulfilling this ambitious goal.
The scope of the housing initiative is not limited to new construction. As part of this multifaceted approach, Birmingham is also focusing on critical repairs and the preservation of existing housing stock. Currently, construction is progressing on additional housing projects, including 16 single-family homes in the Woodlawn community and 27 homes in the Oak Hill subdivision of Belview Heights. These efforts underscore the city’s proactive stance on addressing housing disparities and improving living conditions for underserved communities.
In a statement, Mayor Woodfin emphasized the collaborative nature of these projects, remarking, “The work underway in our city includes millions in investments for critical repair renovations for hundreds of families, down payment assistance enabling many families to buy their first home, and the construction of additional single-family houses. This cannot be accomplished without the support of the council and the dedication of team members from several departments in the city working together to support the people of Birmingham.”
As part of the ongoing commitment to enhancing homeownership opportunities, Mayor Woodfin and the Department of Community Development recognized Homeownership Month during the council meeting on June 24, 2025. This proclamation serves as a reminder of the importance of stable housing in fostering community growth and economic stability.
Overall, the partnership between the City of Birmingham and the National Community Reinvestment Coalition represents a significant step towards improving housing equity and ensuring that all residents have access to safe, affordable living spaces. This initiative not only aims to meet immediate housing needs but also generates long-term benefits for the community as a whole, fostering a more inclusive and sustainable environment for present and future generations.
