Children’s Museum Houston Offers Sensory-Friendly Day for Families
Children’s Museum Houston to Host Sensory Friendly Day on February 10, 2025
Children’s Museum Houston is poised to welcome families with children who experience sensory processing differences for a Sensory Friendly Day on Monday, February 10, 2025. This event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is designed to offer a supportive and accommodating environment that fosters exploration, learning, and fun for all participants.
This initiative comes in response to the growing recognition of the need for inclusive spaces that cater to the diverse sensory needs of children. By implementing several key adjustments, such as reduced noise levels, dimmed lighting, and limiting attendance, the museum aims to create a soothing atmosphere. These adaptations are crucial for families seeking recreational activities that prioritize sensory sensitivities and promote engagement without overwhelming stimuli.
During the Sensory Friendly Day, families will have access to a variety of interactive experiences specifically tailored to inspire curiosity and creativity among children. One of the primary attractions will be the Sensory Friendly Storytime sessions, where children can engage their imaginations through captivating narratives. Additionally, therapy animals from Faithful Paws will be on hand to provide comfort and companionship, enhancing the overall experience.
This event will also feature screenings of two impactful films, Deaf Giants and 4 Quarters of Silence, as part of the ReelAbilities Film Festival, which aims to promote awareness and appreciation of the lives of people with disabilities through film. Another highlight will be an interactive workshop presented by the Houston Ballet, which will offer attendees an introduction to the art of dance, focusing on its beauty and expressiveness.
For families looking for a quieter space, the museum will provide a designated Cool Down Room on the second floor, where guests can take a moment to recharge in a calm setting.
Moreover, attendees will have the opportunity to connect with various community partners, including ACES ABA, Bright Path Behavior, Diagnostic Intelligence Assessment Group, LLC, and the University of Houston Cognitive Lab. These organizations specialize in offering resources and support for children with developmental and behavioral challenges, providing families with valuable insights into available services.
Pre-registration is essential for those interested in attending this meaningful event. Families can secure their spots by contacting Lydia Dungus at ldungus@cmhouston.org or by calling (713) 535-7238.
For those unable to participate in February, there are additional Sensory Friendly Days scheduled later in the year, specifically on April 7 at the Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center and April 14 at Children’s Museum Houston. These events represent ongoing efforts to create inclusive, accessible experiences for families navigating sensory processing differences.
