Sam Wheeler Appointed as Executive Director of Writers Guild Of America East
The Writers Guild of America East has announced the appointment of Sam Wheeler as its new Executive Director, starting on April 1. Wheeler brings a wealth of experience from his previous role as the national executive director of the American Guild of Musical Artists (AGMA).
Expressing his gratitude for the opportunity, Wheeler stated, “I am honored to join the WGAE as Executive Director. WGAE members have built a dynamic, member-led, fighting union and I am thrilled to be part of the work ahead.”
During his time at AGMA, Wheeler led negotiations for various arts organizations, including the Metropolitan Opera and American Ballet Theatre. He was also instrumental in revising the guild’s governing documents, leading to a constitutional referendum in 2020.
President of the Writers Guild of America East, Lisa Takeuchi Cullen, expressed confidence in Wheeler’s ability to lead the organization, stating, “His clear strategic vision impressed our Search Committee and Council, as did his reputation for working closely with members and staff, leading tough negotiations, and diligently administering collective bargaining agreements.”
Prior to his role at AGMA, Wheeler worked as an attorney at Cohen, Weiss, and Simon LLP.
The appointment of Sam Wheeler as Executive Director marks a new chapter for the Writers Guild of America East, with expectations of continued growth and success under his leadership.
