Spotlight on Benny’s Carwash: A Legacy Business

Benny’s Car Wash: A Baton Rouge Institution Celebrating Over 70 Years of Community Commitment
Benny’s Car Wash, an enduring family business rooted in Baton Rouge since 1951, stands out not only for its extensive automotive services but also for its deep community involvement. Founded by Benny Alford and sustained through four generations, the company has expanded significantly from its original location, now operating eight car wash facilities that include additional services such as oil changes, gas pumps, and convenience stores.
The Alford family, led by Benny along with his sons, Jason and Justin, and daughter, Helen, actively manages the day-to-day operations. This hands-on approach reflects their commitment to the Baton Rouge community, a place they regard as home. “Our entire family was born and raised here. We’re dedicated to giving back to the community that shaped us,” said Jason Alford. The car wash employs approximately 400 local residents, contributing to the local economy and fostering job creation. Their dedication to community support is evident in numerous charitable initiatives, including involvement in local events and donations to various organizations.
A notable highlight of Benny’s philanthropic efforts is the Annual Haunted Car Wash, which began in the mid-1980s. This event has evolved into a major community attraction, raising funds exclusively for Our Lady of the Lake (OLOL) Children’s Hospital. “Seeing the community come together for a great cause year after year is incredibly rewarding,” remarked Justin Alford. The family business embraces a mission to be recognized as the premier service organization in the Baton Rouge area.
In addition to its charitable endeavors, Benny’s Car Wash is poised for future growth. The recent opening of their fourth convenience store and fuel station, B-Quik, next to the car wash on Lee Drive, exemplifies their expansion strategy. Additionally, they plan to launch a new facility in Baker, which will feature a car wash, fuel station, and full-service options to further enhance their customer offerings. There are also intentions to extend their footprint into other areas such as Zachary, showcasing a vision for sustained growth within Greater Baton Rouge.
Fun fact: Benny’s Car Wash made a cameo in the 1982 film “The Toy,” starring Richard Pryor.
As Benny’s Car Wash continues to thrive, they remain committed to their mantra: “Let’s make the Baton Rouge area better together.” This slogan reflects their goal to not only provide essential services but also to uplift their community through dedication and active participation in local affairs.
